Work Habits: As we embark on the second half of first grade, one of the big shifts we make is preparing for second grade.  With that, students will see an increase the amount of independence required.  Students will also be expected to finish work a little quicker and provide more detail in their written work.  Emphasis will be placed on producing work that is neat and complete. Students will be encouraged to ask for clarification of directions are not clear, and held accountable for work that does not get finished in the given amount of time.  If you receive an orange “UhOh!” note with some work attached, this is work that was not finished in class.  Please be assured I do take into account time spent in reading groups, testing or completing homework as well as the individual needs of each child prior to sending unfinished work home.

Week at a View:

Reading: This week we will be reading Tackylocks and Tacky in Trouble plus studying about Little Blue Penguins.  Please ask your child about Tacky and his adventures, and 3 new things they learned about Little Blues.

Writing: We are researching penguins, highlighting important facts and writing about the penguins we study daily. We will also work on summarizing and comparing the Tacky the Penguin stories.

Our personal goals this week are:

I will use uppercase and lowercase letters correctly.

I will place a period, or correct punctuation at the end of my sentences.

I will make sure to have space between my words.

I will stretch words and write more sounds.

Word Work Focus this week:

Short Vowels: -an, -ad

Digraphs: c, h, ch

Long  Vowels: short i & long i

Mathematics: Last week we assessed assessing Unit 4 Today we completed the 2nd Quarter pre-assessment for units 5-9.  It is amazing to see how confident, strong and quick our mathematicians have become.  They are doing great learning new things every day.
